Fighting Rust & Tips

  • If it rains or snows will the treatment be effective?
  • Yes. Rust Check displaces moisture, so it can be applied in any weather, and at any time of the year.

  • Is there anything I should do to prepare my car for an
  • To prepare a vehicle for application all we ask is that the vehicle is clean and the trunk is empty. If the vehicle is a 4 x 4, it is requested that any mud or heavy build up is pressure washed off prior to bringing the vehicle in. These steps will help the technician stay within the estimated 1 hour time limit.

  • My car already has a different type of rustproofing applied on it, will Rust Check be as efficient in this case?
  • Yes. In cases where an alternate product such as wax or tar based treatment has been used prior to Rust Check, those products typically show signs of failure after time.
Drying, cracking and eventual flaking generally occur allowing moisture to creep beneath the coating, causing rust. Rust Check if applied over these coating also creeps in behind and pushes out the moisture, thus attacking the spread of rust.

  • Are floor boards covered under your warranty?
  • Floor boards on vehicles are not covered under the terms of the warranty. This is due to the fact that the majority of floor boards rust from the inside below the carpet, where Rust Check is not applied.
A simple precaution to this problem is the use of pantsaver floor mats, which catch the water, snow and ice that is brought into the vehicle by the occupants. This small investment could eventually save you hundreds of dollars in repair bills.

  • Are there benefits to using touch-up paint?
  • Stone chips are a major cause of surface rust on vehicles. The use of touch-up paint greatly reduces the risk of paint blisters caused by chips. By taking care of a small problem when it is noticed, it could save you hundreds of dollars in eventual body work costs.

  • RUST CHECK Application of JEEP CJ & YJ MODELS
  • The Jeep CJ and YJ models pose obvious problems as the vehicle is predominantly single panel construction, except for the doors, tailgate and windshield frame. However, these single panel areas can be adequately sprayed from inside the vehicle by simply lifting the carpeting. For the most part, these trim items are not glued to the panels and are easily moved or removed.

The doors have very poor access on the outer casing and for this reason it is best to remove the retainer strap then swing the door around 150 degrees and drill two holes on the forward casing. These holes are best positioned between the door hinges.

The tailgate requires a lower hole at the lowest point on the casing and, two or three across the inside top of the tailgate. This may seem out of the ordinary, but is necessary due to the spare tire support brackets which cause a blockage for the 4' wand.

This windshield frame must be accessed and thoroughly sprayed. This can be done by drilling a 1/2" hole at the lower corners of the windshield frame (located at each end of the dash board). Manufacturer's factory plugs can be found underneath both sun visors along the bottom edge. Just remove these plugs, spray thoroughly and replace them. If it is necessary to drill the upper windshield frame, do so where the plug will he hidden by the sun visor.

All exterior and interior body seams should be sprayed with the trim wand and sprayed again in six months following the procedure for single panel pick up trucks.

  • Japanese built vehicles with rear hatch door and r
  • Certain Japanese built vehicles, namely Chrysler Colts, Toyota Tercels, GLC and, Honda CIVICs, around the area where the rear window wiper assembly is connected to the hatch, has on occasion rusted. To examine this matter a little closer, we spoke with a Honda representative who told us that on a few cars the wiper assembly is installed after the car has been completely assembled and tinted. Consequently, when the hole in the hatch is cut to install the wiper assembly, two problems can arise.

The first possible problem is that the cutting OJ used to make the hole in the hatch is dull. This can cause excessive heat as the hole is being cut. The heat separates the paint from the metal, which then allows moisture to condense on the metal under the paint. This moisture causes rust that expands, which explains the paint bubbles and blisters that start in this area.

The second problem is, in some cases, the metal isn't properly protected around the edges where the hole is cut. The exposed metal allows rust to start and spread under the paint. This causes blistering and cracking of the painted surface.

Please be aware of these potential problems and, bring them to the owner's attention if it pertains to his/her vehicle. Direct them back to their local car Dealer or Area Representative.

  • PONTIAC GRAND AM
  • There have been numerous surface rust problems with the Pontiac Grand Am, mainly two doors.

Surface rust is occurring at the base of the side rear window molding, due to window molding vibration. The more the molding vibrates, the more it will scratch the paint, and the rust will become progressively more apparent. This surface rust also occurs along the side body molding.

The Grand Am is known to have paint adhesion problems (on the trunk lip, doors, quarter panels, fender wells, etc.) which results in paint blemishes or blisters. The blemishes develop mainly because moisture is being trapped between the paint and the exterior metal causing the paint to bubble. This signifies that the rusting process is well underway and must be stopped.

If you observe this problem, alert the customer. Explain that the Rust Check product cannot stop this process because it is surface rust and encourage the customer to return to their GM dealer. If the vehicle is less than three years old, GM has been known to correct the problem. If the GM dealer does not satisfy the customer, the area representative must be consulted.

This problem can be corrected just as any other surface rust, or cosmetic rust can be, by thoroughly sandblasting, priming and painting the area of concern.

  • FORD ECONOLINE VANS
  • After inspecting numerous surface rust blemishes on all types of Ford Econoline vans, we have related the problem directly back to the manufacturer's paint application process. This problem is not restricted to any particular area; it can appear anywhere between the front bumper and the rear bumper. In some instances large chunks of paint may actually peel off the surface.

These rust blisters can be a cosmetic problem and can be repaired by sandblasting, priming and painting, just like any other surface rust problem.

If this problem is detected early enough, the Ford dealer or Ford area representative will correct the problem. Be sure to make your customers aware of this developing problem. If you see it occurring, alert the customer and advise them to return to the dealer immediately.
